Clinical Hypnotherapy
How Clinical Hypnotherapy Works
Clinical hypnotherapy is an evidence-based therapeutic approach that utilises the natural state of focused attention, known as hypnosis, to accesses your subconscious mind – where deep-seated patterns, beliefs, and behaviours reside.
Together we can take advantage of this state of focused awareness to help you create lasting, positive changes in your life. Hypnotherapy works by bypassing the critical, analytical mind and speaking directly to the subconscious, where transformation can occur more readily.
During hypnosis, your brainwaves shift into a state similar to the moments just before sleep, or during deep meditation. In this relaxed state, your mind becomes highly receptive to positive suggestions and new ways of thinking. You remain completely aware and in control throughout the process – you cannot be made to do anything against your will or values.
This heightened state of suggestibility allows us to:
- Reprogram limiting beliefs and negative thought patterns
- Access and resolve root causes of issues
- Install positive suggestions for lasting change
- Strengthen your natural healing and coping abilities
- Connect you with your inner wisdom and resources

The Hypnotherapy Process
During the initial consultation we’ll discuss your goals, concerns, and expectations. I’ll answer any questions you have, and discuss what type of treatment programme (or individual session) would be most beneficial for your needs. The design of your bespoke programme will be a collaborative process, based on both your priorities established during the initial consultation, and regular reviews as the process moves along, allowing for flexibility and adaptation to your needs.
Each session typically includes:
- Brief discussion of progress and any concerns
- Relaxation and induction into hypnosis
- Therapeutic work using suggestions, imagery, and regression as appropriate
- Gentle return to full awareness
- Discussion of the experience and any insights
I often provide guidance for home practice to reinforce the therapeutic work where appropriate. We’ll also discuss practical strategies you can use in daily life to maintain and build upon the changes achieved in hypnosis.
With your consent, I will integrate hypnotherapy with other evidence-based approaches including EMDR, somatic work, and parts therapy if/when I think it may be beneficial to you (though you can of course opt for a hypnotherapy-only programme).
I strive to create a safe and supportive environment where you can explore sensitive issues without judgment. My trauma-informed approach ensures that all hypnotherapy work is conducted with awareness of how trauma affects the nervous system and healing process.
